Like I said, proceed with caution: Gender differences are complicated and politically sensitive topics.

“To say the least it [the debate over brain differences] is a fairly passionate and politicized one. On the one hand are people who claim that hardwired male/female brain differences can explain all sorts of behavioral differences—that women simply are, on average, more nurturing, while men are more aggressive. On the other are those who claim that there's really no such thing as a ‘male’ or a ‘female’ brain, and that these distinctions have been used to support sexist beliefs and policies.”62

“Scientists generally study four primary areas of difference in male and female brains: processing, chemistry, structure, and activity. These differences between male and female brains in these areas show up all over the world, but scientists also have discovered exceptions to every so-called gender rule.”63

In a study at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, a group of 18 researchers looked at data from more than 5,000 people who agreed to scan their brains as part of the UK Biobank. It is the biggest single study of sex differences in the human brain. They found the following:

1. There are differences between male and female brains. There is also a lot of overlap.

2. These differences could help better understand diseases that impact one sex more than another.

3. The study had no causal conclusions (nurture versus nature).64

A second analysis of the data found that “brain features correctly predicted subjects’ sex about 69–77% of the time.”65

In processing, male brains use about seven times more gray matter for activity than female brains do. Gray matter areas are information- and action-processing centers. This gray matter allows for more focused activity. Female brains use nearly 10 times more white matter. White matter connects the gray matter and other processing centers with one another. This allows for more networking and multitasking.66

Structurally, male and female brains tend to have different hemispheric divisions of labor. Females process language on both sides of the brain. Males tend to use only the left hemisphere for language. Furthermore, there is less connectivity in male brains between their word centers and their memories and feelings. The hippocampus in a female brain tends to be larger and tends to have a higher density of neural connections. Therefore, female brains tend to take in more sensory data about their surroundings and remember it more vividly. Male brains have a larger amygdala than female brains, even after the difference in overall brain size is accounted for. (Males tend to have larger brains in part because they tend to have larger bodies.)

Emotional processing for females tends to occur faster because of more blood flow between the right and left brain. Male brains take longer to process emotions.

Chemically, both brains process serotonin (calming and feeling good), testosterone (sex and aggression), estrogen (female growth and reproduction), and oxytocin (bonding and relationships). These chemicals tend to be processed differently. “Males on average tend to be less inclined to sit still for as long as females and tend to be more physically impulsive and aggressive.
